WEEE Fire and Lithium Batteries as the latest additions to WEEELABEX audit checklist

After a long and detailed discussion with WEEELABEX Group of Experts, WEEELABEX Office introduced changes to their A 04 Auditor manual for all WEEELABEX Auditors to use, adding new arising serious issues with treating, handling and storing of WEEE such as WEEE fire on sites and handling and storing of Lithium batteries. These additions include fire extinguishers for lithium batteries, detectors at site, correct containment, warehousing, manipulation and handling but also training of employees in case of fire with a solid fire plan, exit route and communication with local fire brigade.

The changes have been communicated to our auditors and apply for any new general audits from 1st July 2024, however there is a transition period for audits, that have been already planned or approved before these changes from 1st July 2024 until 31st December 2024. After this period these changes will apply to all audits. This does not mean the auditors will not already inform the operators about these changes and possibilities for improvement in this area as well.
